CONSTANTIVS II

Reigned: 337-361 A.D.

Thessalonica

THESSALONICA (Salonika, Greece - 40°38'N, 22°58'E), founded by King Cassander of Macedonia in 316 BC when he consolidated about twenty-six small villages onto the site, is at the head of the Gulf of Therme with an anchorage protected by the Chalcidice peninsula. The Romans took Macedonia in 167 BC and made the city the provincial capital when Macedonia became a province in 146 BC. It had a local mint since 200 BC, and issued Greek imperial coins from Augustus to Gallienus. An Imperial mint opened in 298 or 299 and it was in nearly continuous operation until the reign of Leo I (457-474). (From MONETA, from www.numus.com)
