LICINIVS I

Reigned: 308-324 A.D.

VALERIVS LICINIVS LICINIANVS was born in Moesia Superior about 260 to peasants. He was a military friend of Galerius, who had him named Augustus at the Conference of Carnuntum in 308. Licinius formed an alliance with Constantine I, which provoked Maximinus II to attack in 313, an action which ended with Maximinus' suicide. Licinius fell out with Constantine, which resulted in two civil wars. The first, in 316-317, resulted only in territorial loss for Licinius. The second, in 324, resulted in his defeat and capture. He was executed in the spring of 325 on charges of renewed plotting against Constantine. (From MONETA, from www.numus.com)
