CONSTANTINE I MAGNVS (THE GREAT)

Reigned: 307-337 A.D.

Ticinum

TICINVM (Pavia, Italy - 45°12'N, 9°09'E), on the left bank of the Ticino River about four miles from its junction with the Po River, was the site of Publius Cornelius Scipio's defeat by Hannibal in 218 BC, but it is not otherwise noted in Roman history until Imperial times. Aurelian moved the mint of Milan there about 274 perhaps because of concerns over Milan's security, and it remained open until about 327 when Constantine I closed it. The city was sacked by Attila the Hun in 452, but it was rebuilt by the Ostrogoth Theoderic after the western Empire fell. Its modern name is from its Lombard name, "Papia".(From MONETA, from www.numus.com)
