Other Ancient Coins
While my primary focus has always been ancient Roman coins, over the years I have accumulated a small collection of pieces from outside the Roman world. These coins may not fit neatly into my main collecting interests, but each one appealed to me for a different reason and added variety to my trays.
Some came as part of group lots alongside Roman bronzes and denarii. Others were purchased simply because the history behind them was too interesting to ignore. I have a few Greek bronzes with bold portraits, several Byzantine pieces that bridge the transition from the ancient to medieval world, and even a handful of medieval and early modern coins that caught my attention because of their unusual designs or historical connections.
What I enjoy most about this small side collection is the perspective it provides. Comparing these coins to Roman issues highlights how different cultures expressed power, religion, and identity through their coinage. The artistry, inscriptions, and fabric of the coins often tell very different stories from those found on Roman imperial pieces.
Although Roman coins remain my main passion, these non-Roman coins add depth and variety to my collection and remind me that ancient numismatics is a remarkably broad and fascinating field.
